Demolition of Asbestos Contaminated Cottages
Noble Works Australia were contracted to undertake the removal of five Friable Asbestos ridden cottages along the George's River. Access was established off Old Ferry Road and environmental protection measures and evacuation points were put in place. All identified asbestos and hazardous materials were removed in accordance with the WSP report, with ongoing testing carried out throughout the works for any unexpected finds. Friable asbestos removal was completed by a Class A licence holder with a decontamination unit on site, following the relevant Code of Practice with full controls applied.
All barge-based works were conducted under the barge contractor's safety guidelines. Ticketed operators used the EWP — approved by the barge contractor prior to use — to dismantle the roof and wall framework, with all workers harnessed and inside the bucket at all times. An excavator with grab attachment handled materials on land, loading into skip bins and trucks. A structural engineer periodically inspected each structure throughout demolition to manage the risk of collapse. Any materials that entered the water were retrieved via netting or emu picking at low tide.
Demolished material was transported by truck using appropriate bins and containers, with all loads secured using straps, nets, and tarps. An additional barge carried crane-able bins offshore, floating material back to land for transfer into skip bins and trucks via excavator. Daily housekeeping was maintained throughout, with a final clean completed across the full work area upon completion.
